Janet Jackson Says Not Giving Up Singing for Acting

Janet Jackson Says Not Giving Up Singing for Acting
Janet Jackson

is fighting back against fans who have accused her of dropping music for movies - because she worked as an actress years before landing her first record deal. The singer has been showing off her acting skills in recent years, including roles in 's movie sequel "" and his upcoming drama "".

And while the "Nasty" hitmaker is adamant she will return to music, she's reminding critics she got her first taste of fame with a role in 1970s U.S. sitcom "Good Times" - not with a record contract. She says, "A lot of people feel I've given up my music for acting and they have to realize this was my first passion. This was my first career. I had a recording contract when I was 14 but I started acting when I was 10."

And she's been aching to return to acting ever since her former manager father, Joe Jackson, pushed her into music. She adds, "I'm just really living out a dream I've had for a very long time. I never really wanted to be in music, I'm not complaining because it's been very good to me but I did it because my father wanted me to, so I'm finally getting to do something."
